CHAPTER 6
The Labyrinth
I was twelve or thirteen years old when, for the first time that, I had a thought that, even now, I still cannot explain logically.
I suddenly began to feel that life is a game. Of course, not in the usual sense of the word, and not as something unserious, but as a space in which each of us has our own path. Like a labyrinth – large and complex, with no straight road through it.
In this labyrinth, we have tasks, we have goals, and we have choices. And we are already inside it.
We cannot leave the game, because otherwise we will simply begin again – with different conditions and a different starting point, but the game will begin again anyway.
Some people follow their path, some give up, some get lost – and everything goes in circles. But the game itself continues.
I remember that even back then, I wrote: “Life is a labyrinth.”
At the time, I did not yet know why I was writing it. I simply felt that way.
Back then, it seemed to me that there were no mistakes in this labyrinth, but there were dead ends. There were situations that seemed wrong, and there were turns that we did not understand. But all of this was also part of the path.
And the most important thing I am beginning to understand now is that we need not only to keep going, but to learn to trust.
To trust our own path, even when it seems difficult. Even when we cannot see a way out.
Because the path of each one of us is not accidental. It is chosen by me, by you, by all of us.
Now, at forty-two, I look at my life and I see the same thing – a labyrinth.
The same turns, the same dead ends, the same moments when it feels as though you are lost. But the difference is that now I understand more.
Before, I simply kept going. Now, I am beginning to see.
It is as if I have been given a map. Not all at once, and not in its entirety, but this map reveals itself step by step.
I understand that we learn how to read this map as we make our way through the labyrinth. Not before we enter it, but when we are already inside.
And perhaps that is the whole point. Not to know the way out from the very beginning, but to keep moving, to try, to make mistakes, and to keep going again.
Because the way out exists, but only those who do not give up inside the labyrinth will reach it.
